A journey in the footsteps of my great-grandmother

'Our duration is not merely one instant repalcing an other; if it were, there would never be anything but present – no prolonging of the past in the actual…
Duration is the continuous progress of the past which gnaws in to the future and which swells as it advances. (Bergson Creative Evolutions 1911)

The past, in short, does not tail off like a succession of dots left ever further behind. Such a tail is but the ghost of history, retrospectively reconstructed as a squence of unique events. In reality, the past is with us as we press into the future. In this pressure lies the work of memory, the guiding hand of a consciousness that, as it goes along, also rembers the way. Retracing the lines of past lives is the way we proceed along our one lives.’
